Like so many of Reggae’s greats, Freddie McGregor served his musical apprenticeship at the legendary Studio One first teaming up as a youth with Ernest Wilson to record as Freddie & Fitzroy before cutting a number of crucial solo sides culminating in 1980 with the release of the classic ‘Bobby Babylon’ album for Coxsone. Freddie went on to enjoy further hits for producers Niney the Observer and Earl ‘Chinna’ Smith before teaming up in 1981 with producer Linval Thompson to lay down the much-loved ‘Big Ship’ album. Recorded and mixed at Channel One & Harry J’s the album successfully showcased Freddie’s expert blend of Roots and Lovers over a tuff selection of Roots Radics rhythms. Freddie scored a massive hit with the title track ‘Big Ship’ which is now regarded as his signature tune.
