Awarded a five star review by Rolling Stone magazine on it’s original 1978 release, Hugh Mundell’s ‘Africa Must Be Free By 1983’ was met with great acclaim and has gone on to be one the most sought after of all classic roots reggae albums. Mundell had previously chat pon sound as Jah Levi for Augustus Pablo’s Rockers Sound System and would record an solid body of work both as singer and mic man for Pablo’s Rockers imprint. Mundell would go on to release many a self produced roots classic on his won Mun Rock label including the classic ‘Great Tribulation’ . For the ‘Mundell’ album, produced by Henry ‘Junjo’ Lawes and released through Greensleeves in 1982, Hugh was accompanied by The Roots Radics and demonstrated how well he could adapt to new style rhythms. The future was looking bright but Hugh Mundell’s life was tragically cut short on 14th October 1983, the music he left behind stands testament to loss of one Jamaica’s most talented sons.
