Al Campbell made his recording debut aged nine with “Freedom See Quality” for Duke Reid. The record never saw release and Al returned to his schooling where he teamed up with Ernest Wilson and Freddie McGregor to form The Three Lads, they recorded two songs for Kenneth Wilson before Al moved on to work with The Thrillers. As well as recording with Studio One Al worked as an arranger and also sung harmonies on a number of classic Brentford Road sides including ‘Dennis Brown’s ‘If I Follow My Heart’ and Larry Marshall’s ‘It Makes Me Feel’. Introduced to producer Phil Pratt by Ernest Wilson and Jacob Miller, Al found himself running Phil Pratts’ Terminal Records record shop and then soon back in the studio recording a number of hit sides for Phil Pratt including the massive hit ‘Gee Baby’. A series of successful albums followed in quick succession for Phil Pratt. U Brown, Bunny Lee & Linval Thompson as well as no less than five self-produced LP’s. In 1981 Al enjoyed more chart success with Greensleeves Records with the singles ‘Unfaithful Children’ produced by Linval Thompson plus t more two self-productions ‘Really. Really Love You’ and ‘Natural High’ along with his much loved ‘The Other Side Of Love’ album. Adapting to the new dancehall style Al’s profile never dropped scoring a 80’s hits for the likes of ‘Junjo’, King Jammy and George Phang. Al has continued enjoy success on record and stage all through the following decades and today remains one of reggae music’s most loved vocalists.
